James Patrick Harley’s 1981 FLH Classic.

James Patrick (“Pat”) Harley was born in approximately 1948, the Grandson of William S. Harley Co-founder of the Harley Davidson motor Company. In around 1966, at the age of 18, Pat was unfortunately involved in a horrific motorcycle accident. He was left paralized and Doctors told him he would never walk again, let alone ride a motorcycle. Pat however always said he would ride again, and as it turned out he did.

This 1981 Harley Davidson FLH Classic was the first and only such motorcycle built by Harley Davidson. The Juneau, Avenue Harley Davidson plant, where the experimental and Engineering Department was located, developed this motorcycle with a sidecar specially for Pat. This one of a kind motorcycle (Classified as experimental) featured enclosed foot rest (To prevent feet from falling off), a hand shift , (for foot free operation), high back seat for support, And a seatless sidecars built to accept a wheelchair. This motorcycle was built to fit Pat’s every need.

This one of a kind bike was sold to Pat for one dollar, and of course he paid the sales tax of 5 cents. The keys to the bike were presented by William Godfrey “Willie G.” Davidson, Pat’s Uncle and the senior vice president & chief styling officer of Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Willie is also the head of Harley-Davidson’s Willie G. Davidson Product Development Center in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and son of Harley Davidson’s Founder. And Harley Davidson Engineer John Gaedke showed Pat all the bikes Attributes.

James Patrick “Pat” Harley passed away at the age of 59 on December 10, 2007.
